The short answer
If you only have 30 seconds: in Windsor-Essex in 2026, painting the inside of a typical three-bedroom home (walls, ceilings and trim) usually costs about $3,500–$7,000. Painting the outside of a two-storey house is about $6,500–$12,500, and one bedroom is about $400–$800. Add 13% HST to every price in this guide.
| Job | Typical price | What that covers |
|---|---|---|
| One bedroom | $400–$800 | Two coats on walls (most guides include the ceiling) |
| Whole interior, about 1,500 sq ft | $3,500–$7,000 | Walls, ceilings and trim in a typical three-bedroom home |
| Whole interior, about 2,000 sq ft | $4,250–$7,750 | Walls, ceilings and trim |
| Exterior, bungalow | $3,500–$7,000 | Siding, trim, fascia and soffits |
| Exterior, two-storey detached | $6,500–$12,500 | Siding, trim, fascia and soffits |
| Kitchen cabinets, typical kitchen | $2,000–$4,000 | Doors, drawer fronts and boxes, reinstalled |
How to read these prices
Every range includes paint and labour, two coats of mid-grade paint and normal prep, and is before HST. They are typical market ranges, not Happy Guys quotes. A job in great condition can come in below them. Repairs, high ceilings or awkward access can push it above.
The rest of this guide shows where each range comes from, what moves a quote up or down, and how to compare estimates fairly, so you can sanity-check any painter's price, including ours.
How we built these numbers
There is no official price index for house painting in Windsor, and the cost guides you find online disagree with each other, sometimes by a factor of two. So we did not copy one of them. We read 13 published price guides from 2025 and 2026: two about Windsor, three from Toronto contractors, four covering Ontario and four covering all of Canada.
For each job we collected every range that matched it, took the middle value of the low ends and the middle value of the high ends (the median, so one wild number cannot drag the result) and rounded. Toronto figures were cut by 15%, because several guides put Toronto and the GTA roughly 10% to 25% higher than elsewhere in Ontario or Canada. Every price is treated as before HST.
That makes these typical ranges. They are not a price list, and no honest guide can be one: the same house can be quoted $4,000 or $9,000 depending on prep, paint and who does the work. Every source, with its date, is listed in Sources and methodology at the bottom of this page, along with every figure behind every range.
How much does it cost to paint a room?
Room prices are the easiest way to compare quotes, because the scope is small and clear. These assume two coats of mid-grade paint, standard 8-foot ceilings and light prep. Some guides include the ceiling and some do not, which is one reason the ranges are wide.
| Room | Typical price | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | $400–$800 | A larger primary bedroom, deep closets and heavy trim cost more. |
| Living or dining room | $500–$1,250 | More wall area, taller ceilings and more trim to cut around. |
| Kitchen walls | $400–$850 | Lots of cutting in around cabinets and backsplash. Cabinets are priced separately. |
| Bathroom | $300–$550 | Small, but detailed work around tubs, vanities and fixtures. |
Extras are priced per unit. Ceilings add about $1.00–$2.00 per sq ft, baseboards and trim about $2.00–$3.00 per linear foot, and interior doors about $50–$175 each.
Stairwells, two-storey foyers and basements are quoted separately because of the ladders, scaffolding and extra prep involved. Also watch for minimum charges. Some painters set a minimum project fee (HomeStars (opens in a new tab) cites $1,000 to $2,000), while others will do a single room for a few hundred dollars. Ask before you book.

How much does it cost to paint the inside of a house?
For a whole-home interior, price follows size more than anything else. These ranges cover walls, ceilings and trim, with paint and labour included:
| Home size | Typical price | Per sq ft of floor area |
|---|---|---|
| About 1,200 sq ft (condo, townhouse or small bungalow) | $3,500–$6,000 | $2.92–$5.00 |
| About 1,500 sq ft (typical three-bedroom) | $3,500–$7,000 | $2.33–$4.67 |
| About 2,000 sq ft | $4,250–$7,750 | $2.12–$3.88 |
| About 2,500 sq ft | $5,500–$9,000 | $2.20–$3.60 |
| 3,000 sq ft or more | $6,000–$9,500 | $2.00–$3.17 |
Walls only, or walls, ceilings and trim?
Scope is the biggest reason two quotes for the same house differ. Painting walls only typically takes 30% to 40% off. Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) lists that range, and Refined Edge Painting's (opens in a new tab) walls-only rate per square foot is about 40% below its rate for walls, ceilings and trim. Always check which surfaces a quote includes before comparing totals.
What about price per square foot?
Most per-square-foot prices online are per square foot of floor area, not per square foot of paint. Refined Edge Painting prices walls only at $1.50 to $2.50 per sq ft of floor area, and walls, ceilings and trim at $2.50 to $4.50. The interior table above works out to about $2.33–$4.67 per sq ft for a typical 1,500 sq ft home, which fits.
Painters themselves price the surface they actually paint. A 12 x 12 ft bedroom with 8-ft ceilings has 144 sq ft of floor, but about 384 sq ft of wall (four walls x 12 ft x 8 ft, before doors and windows) plus 144 sq ft of ceiling. So rates quoted per sq ft of wall cannot be compared with rates per sq ft of floor. Compare totals for the same scope instead.
How much does it cost to paint the outside of a house?
Exterior prices follow the surface being painted (siding, trim, fascia and soffits), the number of storeys and how much prep the walls need. These ranges are for a full repaint, with paint and labour included:
| Home type | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Bungalow | $3,500–$7,000 |
| Semi-detached | $4,750–$8,000 |
| Two-storey detached | $6,500–$12,500 |
| Large or custom home (2,500+ sq ft) | $10,500–$18,000 |
| Trim, doors and shutters only | $1,250–$2,750 |
Painters price the actual surface, not floor area: about $2.75–$4.75 per sq ft for vinyl, aluminum and similar siding, and $3.00–$6.00 for painted brick or stucco.
How long does it take?
- A standard repaint of a home in good condition: 2 to 4 days.
- A full exterior with extensive prep: 3 to 6 days.
- Brick or stucco: 4 to 7 days.
- A multi-storey home needing scaffolding: 5 to 8 days.
Those timelines come from Refined Edge Painting's 2026 Ontario guide (opens in a new tab). Weather can add days.
What is included, and what usually is not
Exterior quotes typically cover siding, trim, fascia and soffits. Decks, fences, front doors and garage doors are usually priced separately (HomeStars (opens in a new tab)). Preparation matters most outside: Refined Edge Painting puts it at 40% to 50% of exterior labour, and Canada Construction Network (opens in a new tab) says freeze-thaw damage repairs add 15% to 20% to Ontario and New Brunswick projects.
Painting or replacing the siding?
Enviro Painting (opens in a new tab) says replacing siding on a standard Ontario home can easily cost $20,000 or more, while painting almost always comes in under $7,500 for comparable coverage. That is one contractor's comparison, but the gap is large enough to be worth a conversation if your siding is sound and only the finish is tired.
Planning an exterior job? See our exterior painting service, or the exterior painting page for Windsor.
How much does cabinet painting and refinishing cost?
Cabinets are priced by the number of doors and drawer fronts, not by square foot. The ranges below cover degreasing, sanding, priming, two coats of cabinet-grade paint and putting the doors back on.
| Kitchen | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Typical kitchen (about 16-25 doors and drawer fronts) | $2,000–$4,000 |
| Large kitchen or island (26-35+ doors and drawer fronts) | $5,500–$9,500 |
| Per cabinet door | $150–$200 |
What moves the price: the number of pieces, how much grease or old varnish has to come off, spraying versus brushing, a big colour change, and extras. One Toronto contractor (Home Painters Pro (opens in a new tab)) lists stripping heavy varnish at $200 to $400, new hardware at $150 to $600 and a two-tone island at $800 to $1,500 on top of the base price.
We found fewer Ontario cabinet price lists than interior or exterior ones, so these ranges rest on three sources for a typical kitchen and two for a large one. Treat them as a starting point and get a quote based on a count of your actual doors and drawers. More on our cabinet refinishing service, including the Windsor page.
What about commercial painting?
Commercial painting is quoted after a walkthrough, and we could not find a reliable Windsor-Essex price range, so we are not going to invent one. One Toronto contractor (Home Painters Pro (opens in a new tab)) publishes $1.50 to $4.00 per sq ft for offices and retail space, with after-hours or weekend scheduling adding 15% to 25%. Treat that as a rough reference only.
What drives a commercial quote:
- Surface area and wall height (lifts and scaffolding).
- After-hours or weekend work to avoid disrupting staff and customers.
- The condition of the walls and how much prep they need.
- Specialty coatings, the number of coats and the number of colours.
- Access, parking and the size of the work window.
Our commercial painting page explains how we approach it. The most reliable way to get a number is a site visit with an itemized quote.
What you are actually paying for
Labour is the biggest part of any painting quote. HomeStars (opens in a new tab) and Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) put it at 60% to 75% of the total. That is because painting is mostly time, and most of that time is not painting. HomeStars says prep is 30% to 50% of a painter's time on site.
Wages versus billing rates
Job Bank (opens in a new tab) wage data for Ontario painters and decorators (NOC 73112) shows $20.00 an hour at the low end, $25.00 at the median and $34.80 at the high end (reference period 2023 to 2024, updated November 2025). Published billing rates are higher, typically $40–$80 per painter per hour, because a painter's rate also has to cover payroll costs, insurance, vehicles, tools, supplies, quoting and scheduling time, and a margin.
Where a $5,000 interior quote goes
| Part of the quote | Share | On a $5,000 quote | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labour (prep, cutting in, rolling, cleanup) | 60% to 75% | $3,000 to $3,750 | HomeStars (opens in a new tab), Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |
| Paint | 10% to 20% | $500 to $1,000 | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |
| Prep materials, equipment, overhead and profit | The rest | About $250 to $1,500 | What is left after the two lines above |
Check: $3,000 to $3,750 of labour at $40 to $80 an hour is about 38 to 94 painter-hours. HomeStars (opens in a new tab) puts a 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft interior at 40 to 80 crew hours, so the pieces fit together. If a quote is far below what the hours and rates imply, something is missing. It is usually prep, primer, a second coat or cleanup.
What makes a painting quote go up (or down)
Two painters can look at the same house and quote different prices, because of what is in it. These adjustments show the direction and rough size. Most come from one contractor's published list, so treat them as a guide, not a rule.
| What changes | Effect on the price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ceilings 9 to 10 ft | +10% to +20% | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |
| Vaulted or cathedral ceilings | +30% to +50% | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |

| Older plaster walls (pre-1960) | +15% to +30% | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |
| Extensive drywall or plaster repair | +$500 to +$2,500 | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |

| Rush timeline | +10% to +20% | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |
| Exterior prep: pressure wash, scrape, caulk, rot repair | +$500 to +$2,000 | Pro Tasker (opens in a new tab) |
| Scaffolding or lift | +$500 to +$2,000 | HomeStars (opens in a new tab) |
| Exterior booked in the June to August peak | +20% to +40% | HomeStars (opens in a new tab) |
| Freeze-thaw damage repairs (Ontario) | +15% to +20% on the project | Canada Construction Network (opens in a new tab) |
| Walls only (no ceilings or trim) | -30% to -40% | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |
| Painting the whole home in one booking | -15% to -25% | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |
| Interior booked October to March | -10% to -20% | Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) |
Premium paint is a factor too. Mid-grade interior paint runs about $40–$65 per gallon, premium about $80–$110 and exterior acrylic latex about $50–$85. The paint is a modest share of the total, but the grade changes how many coats you need and how long the finish lasts: HomeStars (opens in a new tab) says budget paint lasts 5 to 7 years and premium 10 to 15.
Painting in Windsor-Essex: what is different here
Prices sit below Toronto
Pro Tasker (opens in a new tab) puts Toronto and the GTA 10% to 20% above Kitchener, Hamilton and Barrie, HomeStars (opens in a new tab) puts Toronto 15% to 25% above the national average, and GetAHomePro (opens in a new tab) puts Windsor 15% to 20% below Toronto. That is why we reduced Toronto contractor figures by 15% before blending them in.
Older homes and lead paint
Health Canada (opens in a new tab) says a home built before 1960 probably contains lead-based paint, and exteriors built between 1960 and 1990 may. Older neighbourhoods such as Walkerville and Sandwich Town include many homes built well before 1960. Health Canada's advice is that intact lead paint can be safer left alone than removed, and that sanders, heat guns and blowlamps should not be used on it because they create toxic dust and fumes. If your home predates 1990, tell every painter and ask how they will prep. One Toronto contractor adds $300 to $900 for lead precautions in pre-1980 homes.
Humid summers and freeze-thaw winters
Windsor-Essex summers are humid and winters swing above and below freezing. That is hard on exterior paint and a common reason for extra repair work before painting. In bathrooms and basements, ask about mould-resistant, moisture-rated paint.
HST adds 13%
Ontario HST is 13% (5% federal plus 8% provincial, per Rates.ca (opens in a new tab)), and it applies on top of a painter's price. Ask every painter for the total including HST so quotes line up.
| Price before HST | HST (13%) | Total you pay |
|---|---|---|
| $3,000 | $390 | $3,390 |
| $5,000 | $650 | $5,650 |
| $8,000 | $1,040 | $9,040 |
When is the best time to paint?
Inside, any time of year works. Some painters offer lower prices in slower months: Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) lists 10% to 20% off for interior bookings between October and March.
Outside, the weather decides. Most exterior paints need at least 10 degrees Celsius (HomeStars (opens in a new tab)). Sherwin-Williams (opens in a new tab) says its newer latex lines can be applied and will cure in temperatures as low as 2 degrees (35 F), while traditional latex needs it warmer. It also advises painting a dry surface (wait about a day after heavy rain), staying above the dew point for 48 hours and allowing at least four hours of dry time before moisture can settle on latex paint.
In Windsor-Essex that points to late spring through early fall. HomeStars reports exterior rates running 20% to 40% higher in June to August, so it is worth asking whether May or September work could be cheaper, weather permitting.
How to compare painting quotes
HomeStars (opens in a new tab) notes that quotes for the same job often vary by 20% to 40%. Most of that gap is scope, not price.
Make every quote cover the same scope
- Which rooms or areas, and which surfaces: walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets.
- The number of coats, and whether primer is included.
- Paint brand, product line, sheen and colour.
- Prep and repairs: patching, caulking, sanding, scraping.
- Protection for floors and furniture, and cleanup.
- Who will do the work and how many people will be on site.
- Start and finish dates, and the payment schedule.
- The total price including HST.
Know your Ontario rights
Ontario's guide for home renovation businesses (opens in a new tab) (last updated September 2024) sets out what a contract should look like. Rules can change, so check ontario.ca for the current version.
- A written agreement is required for any contract worth more than $50, including the total cost with taxes, the terms of payment and a schedule with start and completion dates.
- If an estimate is in the contract, the final price cannot be more than 10% above it, unless you ask for extra or different work and sign a change to the contract.
- If you sign a contract at your home, you have a 10-day cooling-off period and can cancel without cancellation fees.
- The guide recommends deposits of no more than 10% of the project cost.
Ask about insurance and WSIB
Ask for proof of liability insurance, and ask how workers on your property are covered for workplace injuries. WSIB's clearance certificate policy (opens in a new tab) is aimed at businesses that hire contractors and treats exempt home renovation work separately, so ask the painter to explain their coverage rather than assuming.
Red flags
- No written quote, or a quote that only says "paint interior".
- A price far below the others. Ask what is missing before celebrating.
- No mention of prep, primer or the number of coats.
- A large deposit before any work, or a promise that one coat will cover a dramatic colour change.
- Pressure to sign today, or no start date.
How to lower the cost of painting
- Paint the whole home in one booking. Encore Painting lists 15% to 25% less than doing it in stages.
- Book interior work in slower months. Its figure for October to March is 10% to 20% less.
- Do the easy prep yourself. Clearing rooms, taking down art and removing outlet covers can save $200 to $500, according to Encore Painting.
- Stay in the same colour family. A small colour change saves an estimated 5% to 10% over a dramatic one.
- Skip what does not need painting. Walls only can cost 30% to 40% less than walls, ceilings and trim.
- Pay for the right paint, not the most expensive. Budget paint that needs repainting in 5 to 7 years can cost more per year than premium paint that lasts 10 to 15.
DIY or hire a painter?
Painting is one of the more doable DIY jobs, and the saving is real. Encore Painting (opens in a new tab) compares a single 12 x 14 ft bedroom:
| Option | Cost | Your time |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | $270 to $480 out of pocket (paint $120 to $180, primer, tools and supplies $150 to $300 the first time) | 12 to 20 hours |
| Hire a professional | $450 to $800 plus HST | Almost none |
DIY makes sense for a single room in good condition, in the same colour, with ceilings you can reach from a stepladder. Hire a painter for stairwells and high ceilings, anything above ladder height outside, cabinets, tight deadlines and older homes. DIY does not change the lead-paint advice above: never dry-sand old paint.

How much does it cost to paint a three-bedroom house in Windsor?
Inside, a typical three-bedroom home of about 1,500 sq ft costs about $3,500–$7,000 for walls, ceilings and trim. Outside, a bungalow is about $3,500–$7,000 and a two-storey detached home about $6,500–$12,500. All before 13% HST.
How much do painters charge per hour in Ontario?
Published billing rates are typically $40–$80 per painter per hour. Many companies quote a fixed price for the job instead of an hourly rate. For comparison, Job Bank's median wage for Ontario painters is $25.00 an hour.
Do painters charge HST in Ontario?
Yes. HST is 13% and is added to the price. Ask for the total including HST in writing so you can compare quotes.
How much does it cost to paint one room?
A bedroom is typically $400–$800, a living or dining room $500–$1,250, a kitchen's walls $400–$850 and a bathroom $300–$550. Some painters have a minimum charge for small jobs.
How long does it take to paint a house?
HomeStars (opens in a new tab) puts a 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft interior at 2 to 5 days. For exteriors, Refined Edge Painting (opens in a new tab) lists 2 to 4 days for a standard repaint and up to 8 days for a multi-storey home needing scaffolding.
How much paint do I need for a room?
A gallon (3.79 L) covers about 350 to 450 sq ft per coat. Benjamin Moore (opens in a new tab) lists 37 to 42 square metres per can, and HomeStars says 350 to 400 sq ft. HomeStars puts a typical room at 3 to 4 litres per coat, so plan on about two gallons for two coats.
Why are painting quotes so different?
Scope, prep, paint grade and who does the work. HomeStars says quotes for the same job commonly vary by 20% to 40%. Compare the same list of surfaces, coats and prep line by line.
Is it cheaper to paint in winter?
Interior work can be. Encore Painting lists 10% to 20% off for October to March interior bookings. Exterior painting needs suitable weather, so it is mostly a late spring to early fall job.
How much deposit should I pay a painter?
Ontario's renovation guide recommends deposits of no more than 10% of the project cost, with a payment schedule in the contract.
Does old paint in my Windsor home contain lead?
Health Canada says homes built before 1960 probably contain lead-based paint, and exteriors from 1960 to 1990 may. Do not dry-sand or heat-strip it, and tell your painter how old the home is.
Does Happy Guys Painting give free quotes?
Yes. Quotes are free. Tell us about your project and we will follow up to talk through the scope and confirm the price before any work begins.
Sources and methodology
Every source was read on October 22, 2026. Price figures are the published ranges for the job described, treated as before HST unless a source says otherwise. The "typical" range is the median of the low ends and the median of the high ends of all matching figures, rounded, with Toronto figures multiplied by 0.85.
